This week, I kicked off a brand-new TikTok series where I’m documenting my real-time journey to becoming a top TikTok Shop Creator Affiliate. I’m not selling my own products. I’m building a business as an affiliate, promoting other people’s products listed on TikTok Shop, earning a commission for every sale I help generate.
My goal is to grow this into a consistent $10,000/month income stream, and I’m sharing every step of the process with you. This blog series expands on the daily insights I share in my TikTok videos going deeper into the strategies, tools, and real actions that make this business work.
And today’s blog connects directly with Day 2 of my TikTok Creator Series, where we began with the most important foundational step:
choosing your first product.
Why Product Selection Is Where It All Begins
Most new creators think success comes from getting lucky with a viral video or using the right hashtags. But the truth is: TikTok Shop success starts before you hit record. It starts with what you choose to promote.
When you select the right product; one that fits your style, speaks to your audience, and is easy to demonstrate, everything else becomes easier. The content flows. Your confidence builds. Sales become realistic. On the other hand, pick something awkward or unappealing, and even the best video might flop.
So don’t underestimate this step. Think of your first product as the spark that lights the fire.
What Makes a “Good” Product to Start With?
Let’s break this down simply. A good product for a beginner creator affiliate has to be:
• Scroll-stopping: It needs to grab attention in the first few seconds.
• Visually demonstrable: You should be able to show how it works quickly.
• Relatable or satisfying: It should solve a clear problem or deliver a “wow” moment.
• Affordable or valuable: It must either be low-ticket for easy impulse buys or high-ticket with strong perceived value.
• Available now: Ideally, you already own it or can buy it and film today.
You’re not trying to find the “perfect” product. You’re finding the first step forward — the one that will get you posting and learning.
How I Personally Choose a Product (Step-by-Step)
Here’s exactly what I do when choosing a product to promote as a TikTok Shop affiliate:
1. Log into TikTok Shop Creator Center
I go to Creator Centre (in shop area) and head into the “Find Products” section. This is where all available affiliate products are listed.
2. Apply Smart Filters
I filter by:
• Shipping region (UK for me)
• Minimum 25% commission
• Price range:
• Under £25 for beginner-friendly low-ticket items
• £50+ if I’m exploring high-ticket content
Then I sort by:
• “Hot” (trending now)
• “Commission: high to low” (if I want bigger profit per sale)
3. Scan for Scroll-Stoppers
I open 3–5 products and ask:
• Would this stop me from scrolling?
• Can I demonstrate this visually?
• Do I understand how it solves a problem?
If the answer is yes I shortlist it. If not, I move on fast. Time is more valuable than chasing the “coolest” gadget.
The Low-Ticket Path: Easy Wins and Fast Learning
For most beginners, I recommend starting with low-ticket products (under £25). These convert faster because they’re impulse buys, people don’t overthink.
Think of:
• Kitchen gadgets
• Cleaning tools
• Car accessories
• Beauty tools
• Phone tripods or holders
These types of products are often “scroll-stoppers” by nature. They’re practical, familiar, and fun to show. You can buy one for under £10, film in your kitchen or car, and test within 24 hours.
That fast feedback is gold.
The High-Ticket Option: Big Commission, Big Trust
High-ticket products (over £50–£200+) pay more per sale but they take more skill and trust to sell. If you’re already confident on camera, or want to build authority in a niche (fitness, skincare, tech), you can absolutely start here.
But remember: one bad experience with a high-ticket product can hurt your reputation. Only promote what you’d genuinely use or recommend.
And if you get it right? Even 3–5 sales a month can start building a serious income stream.
What If You Already Own the Product?
This is the best starting point of all. If you already have a product at home that’s listed on TikTok Shop, you can start today no waiting for samples, no upfront costs.
Go to the Creator Center and search the product name. If it’s there, grab your affiliate link, set up your showcase, and plan your demo.
These “organic starts” are powerful. Your content will feel natural. Your results will come faster.
What I Chose First (and What Happened)
My first product was a simple 4 in 1 pen item, nothing glamorous. It cost about £1.67 and offered 10% commission. I bought it myself, filmed a short demo with my phone, and posted without overthinking.
The video didn’t go viral.
It didn’t need to.
It made 11 sales so far
And that was the moment I realised:
“I can actually do this.”
That single video proved the model. From there, it was just a matter of learning, improving, and repeating.
Don’t Fall Into These Beginner Traps
Here’s what to avoid (based on my own missteps):
Don’t chase products just because the commission is high.
If you can’t confidently create content for it, it won’t sell.
Don’t wait weeks for a free sample.
Buy the product, film it, and get moving.
Don’t copy someone else’s video exactly.
TikTok’s algorithm will detect it and so will the audience.
Don’t post once and give up.
This is a numbers game. Consistency wins.
And most importantly don’t assume your first product needs to be your “forever” product. It’s just a step forward. The real power comes from testing, learning, and adapting.
Your Action Plan for Today
If you’re ready to go from thinking to doing, here’s your next move:
1.Log in to TikTok
2.Use the filters to find a low-ticket product with 25%+ commission
3.Watch the example videos and think about how you would show it better
4.Pick one that you already own or order it today
5.Plan your first demo video using your phone
6.Post it, even if it’s not perfect
7.Learn from the results and make video #2
Every creator affiliate you admire started with video #1. This is your moment.
What’s Next in the Series?
I’ve just launched a TikTok video series on this exact topic product selection. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out Day 2: How to Choose the Right TikTok Shop Product on my profile now. I break down what makes a product “scroll-stopping,” how I personally decide what to promote, and what I’ll be testing live over the next few days.
Tomorrow in Day 3, we go even deeper into this:
Product Selection Part 2: Market Research.
I’ll show you how I check TikTok trends, Amazon reviews, and seller ratings to make smarter product decisions before filming.

Hey Atif! I really like how you broke product selection down into something simple and actionable instead of it being so overwhelming. The part that stood out most to me was your reminder that the first product doesn’t need to be the “forever product.” I’ve seen how easy it is to get stuck overthinking that first choice, but you’re right, just picking something and learning from it is what gets the ball rolling. I can relate to testing small, low-ticket items myself and realizing that even a handful of sales is proof that the model works. Great insights here, I’m looking forward to seeing how your series unfolds!

Hi Atif – This is such great advice for someone who’s just getting started in the TikTok shop. As I wait for TikTok to iron out their error on my admittance to the shop, this will help me get past some of the mistakes I would have made without this resource. Thanks for posting and publishing your blog posts as they are truly valuable. have a great week!
I had a lightbulb moment, today. Content that goes viral without laying a foundation (email list, blog posts, you tube channel etc) will go no where fast. Sure it’s a dopamine hit, and that quickly fades, especially without a good strong foundation. What’s the old saying? A foundation built on sand vs a foundation built on rock etc
